Elizabeth had pantomimed the observation to the laughter of her future husband and gentle chuckling of his friend, Mr. Bingley.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">But it IS true. Her face turns a wicked shade of beet red and at first, I feared she would suffer apoplexy right there, in the drawing-room, as she called me the most vile names . . .\u201d Elizabeth\u00a0slanted her eyes to mimic Lady Catherine de\u00a0Bourgh\u2019s harshest critique.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A few days after their arrival in London,\u00a0Elizabeth Bennet had begun to heal enough from\u00a0her injuries to tolerate company for longer and\u00a0longer spells. Her ribs still ached. Murderous\u00a0headaches plagued her in unpredictable measures.\u00a0But for one night, she wished to push the attack\u00a0by her cousin in Kent to the back of her mind\u00a0\u00a0and enjoy the visits of her intended, Mr. Darcy,\u00a0and her sister, Jane, and Jane\u2019s husband, Charles.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The romantically twined couples sat down\u00a0to dine in Elizabeth\u2019s sick room at Mr. Darcy\u2019s\u00a0townhouse. Coincidentally, the room was once\u00a0the suite used by his mother as the mistress of\u00a0the home. In other circumstances, the presence\u00a0of his betrothed in the mistress chambers, let\u00a0alone in his home without a chaperone, would\u00a0provide an insurmountable scandal. Thankfully,\u00a0or ironically as Elizabeth chose to reflect upon\u00a0the situation, plenty of scandal remained swirling\u00a0around the Darcy family from the hastily patched\u00a0up marriage of Darcy\u2019s sister to the steward\u2019s son\u00a0she ran off with the previous summer. Publicly, it\u00a0was a love match bound at Ramsgate. Truthfully,\u00a0the marriage did not occur until December, a\u00a0union not yet six months\u2019 old.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Why should she be so rude? She had never\u00a0met you before that day you arrived with the\u00a0Colonel . . .\u201d Jane furrowed her brows at such\u00a0a recounting of her sister\u2019s arrival in Kent.\u00a0Certain subject matters were safe: Elizabeth\u2019s\u00a0arrival, the walks Darcy and Elizabeth enjoyed\u00a0on the grounds, even the clandestine wedding\u00a0ceremony between Darcy\u2019s cousins with him no\u00a0longer forced to be the groom as his aunt wished.\u00a0No one brought up the last night in Kent. The\u00a0last night barely saw Elizabeth escape alive to\u00a0a tenant on the glebe lands after a concussion &#8211;\u00a0inducing thrashing by her cousin, William\u00a0Collins.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Darcy struggled to regain his composure\u00a0as the image of his future wife ballooning her\u00a0cheeks played over and over again in his mind.\u00a0Her likeness was spot on and yet more comical\u00a0than the original lady in question. Restoring his\u00a0countenance with a well-timed sip of wine, the\u00a0dashingly handsome man of Derbyshire gazed\u00a0with love over the candlelight at the impromptu\u00a0dining table.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Elizabeth is precisely correct in her\u00a0estimations of my aunt. She is known to be\u00a0entirely disagreeable in my family and uncouth\u00a0for well-mannered company. You sister held her\u00a0own most admirably.\u201d Darcy tilted his glass and\u00a0head towards his beloved, who blushed at the\u00a0compliment despite her bruised face.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Hear, hear!\u201d Charles Bingley found a place\u00a0to interject and squeezed his wife\u2019s hand beside\u00a0him. The intimate dining experience created by\u00a0three chairs, a table, and the foot of Elizabeth\u2019s\u00a0bed provided a calming repast from the strictures\u00a0a formal dining room would impose.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Elizabeth involuntarily grimaced. Darcy\u00a0raised an eyebrow at the small adjustments\u00a0Elizabeth made with her torso.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">We have taxed you too long,\u201d he announced\u00a0with a firmness to his voice.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">No, no! We\u2019ve only just begun to eat. See,\u00a0I am well.\u201d Elizabeth took a larger than normal\u00a0bite of her meal in an attempt to persuade him.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Lizzie, we can all see you are uncomfortable.\u00a0It is early to support your weight upright without\u00a0the aid of pillows. Gentlemen, perhaps if you\u00a0give us a moment of privacy I might help my\u00a0sister find a more comfortable position?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The two men gallantly rose from their places\u00a0at the small table usually reserved for playing\u00a0cards and exited the suite in quick succession.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Thank you, Jane. I so desperately needed\u00a0relief!\u201d Elizabeth breathed in and out very\u00a0painful breaths as her gown impaired her ability\u00a0to find a comfortable position.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Perhaps we ought to change your attire,\u00a0would you be in less pain in your robe and\u00a0chemise?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I cannot! It would be indecent. Then the men\u00a0would have to leave us.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Jane giggled and left to fetch the clothing she\u00a0required. \u201cYou wore the same when you were\u00a0unconscious at Netherfield. Both men have seen\u00a0you thus.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">That was different; I was not awake to feel\u00a0morbid shame.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You do play a perfect damsel in distress,\u201d\u00a0Jane said in a deadpan tone as she gingerly\u00a0helped her sister lift the offending gown.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">This time, it was the furthest desire of my\u00a0heart,\u201d Elizabeth said with more emotion than\u00a0she intended.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">For a moment, a silence fell between the\u00a0sisters as Jane tied a perfect bow in the front of\u00a0the heavy brocaded robe.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I know,\u201d Jane whispered.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Elizabeth sniffed in pure defiance of any tears\u00a0that thought twice about falling. Changing her\u00a0mind\u2019s focus, she turned the conversation on her\u00a0elder sister\u2019s sudden lack of propriety.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">When did you become so free of rules and\u00a0proper manners?\u201d Elizabeth accosted her prim\u00a0sister with a heavy accusation. \u201cIf Mama could\u00a0hear you encouraging me to entertain gentlemen\u00a0in my bedroom, in a gentleman\u2019s home, in my\u00a0nightgown and robe . . .\u201d Both women burst out\u00a0laughing heartily at the escalation of ridiculous\u00a0situations they now found themselves living.\u00a0Elizabeth sucked in a breath as the laughter stung\u00a0her ribs most fiercely.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Oh, I\u2019m so sorry, truly sorry,\u201d Jane wiped\u00a0the happy tears forming at the edge of her eyes.\u00a0\u201cPerhaps it is because I am now married and\u00a0learned the mystery of familiarity they keep away\u00a0from gentlewomen is a disservice to a happy life.\u00a0\u00a0Or perhaps I am finding in my new condition that\u00a0new matters are of greater importance and other\u00a0matters . . .\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Less so?\u201d Elizabeth finished, looking\u00a0hopefully up at her sister. Jane nodded and\u00a0Elizabeth felt a cheer in her heart. There were\u00a0more important matters, life and death matters,\u00a0matters of love, that all trumped the arbitrary rules\u00a0set for men and women. Some protection made\u00a0good sense in the case of complete strangers,\u00a0but surely Elizabeth was safe with her sister and\u00a0brother present. She and Mr. Darcy had bonded\u00a0too deeply over their varied adventures to be\u00a0merely an ordinary courtship.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Setting her face firm, Elizabeth gave Jane a\u00a0nod and the gentlemen were invited to reenter.\u00a0Only this time, Jane and Bingley took to the\u00a0table, and Mr. Darcy moved his chair to eat\u00a0bedside with his Elizabeth.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I do believe after we are wed; I should like\u00a0to continue this tradition of private dining in a\u00a0bedroom, Miss Elizabeth.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">You mean I won\u2019t have to seek injury to\u00a0keep your private company?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Darcy leaned closer so that Jane and Charles\u00a0might not hear his response, but the newlywed\u00a0couple was already preoccupied with their own\u00a0concerns. \u201cYou never needed such schemes, my\u00a0dearest.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Elizabeth caught her breath as Darcy\u2019s voice\u00a0washed over her heart like a warm brandy. The\u00a0man vexed her with his ability to stir improper\u00a0feelings in her body that she had spent a lifetime\u00a0being told were wanton and inexcusable in\u00a0a lady. The idea of marrying such a man both\u00a0excited and terrified her, but there was time yet\u00a0before they could leave for Scotland.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Dr. Matthews had said at least two weeks\u2019\u00a0wait, if not more, before he wished for her to\u00a0make such a journey. Elizabeth had at first\u00a0protested, pointing out she made it just fine from\u00a0Kent, but Dr. Matthews defended her arguments\u00a0by saying she very likely cracked a rib and\u00a0was lucky to have not punctured a lung. Such\u00a0a possibility was grave enough to convince Mr.\u00a0Darcy there was no need, nor reason, to risk her\u00a0life further.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I shall take that into consideration, sir.\u201d\u00a0Elizabeth offered her intended a small smile\u00a0despite the constant pain she was in and trying\u00a0her best to hide. Although it was very unchristian\u00a0of her to think so, she rather wished her cousin\u00a0was dead \u2014 or at the very least in thrice the\u00a0amount of pain she was enduring.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Eventually, the pleasant visiting grew to be\u00a0unbearable, and Elizabeth caved, making a rare\u00a0request for a drop of laudanum to be added to\u00a0her wine.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The strong medicine made her very sleepy,\u00a0but she managed to continue the meal. Georgiana Wickham and Caroline Bingley sat across from one another in the far corner of the dining room table from the main doors with very little conversation. The two friends experienced a slight estrangement when Caroline confessed her altercation with Georgiana&#8217;s husband in the study, including his attempts to attack her and his involvement in Lord Strange\u2019s scheme.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Caroline Bingley swirled the wine in her glass as she sized up the little mouse before her. She had overplayed her hand in making such a bold declaration to Mr. Darcy about Mr. Wickham&#8217;s nefarious dealings nearly instantly upon his arrival. Either Darcy was too distracted by that chit, Elizabeth Bennet, he dragged from Kent or Caroline had not truly distinguished herself as instrumental in preserving his family and livelihood. Unwilling to give Elizabeth Bennet any credit for her abilities to captivate Darcy&#8217;s attentions, Caroline decided she must not have exhibited enough yet to show Mr. Darcy how well she would play the role of Mrs. Darcy.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A barely audible sniffle from her dining companion brought a swift smile to Miss Bingley\u2019s lips.
