Errant strains of stringed instruments coming to a halt mingled with the joyfulness of three young women taking a dance\u00a0lesson.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ladies! Ladies, what\u00a0an utter disaster! You\u2019ll laugh now, but a misstep and spin into a fellow dancer would dry up your season\u2019s invitations in a thrice.\u201d Lady Matlock pinched the brow of her nose in aggravation.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Reform the line, if you please,\u201d the dance master announced, punctuating his command with a rapt tapping\u00a0of his cane. Kitty Bennet glanced\u00a0to Georgiana Darcy and concentrated to conceal her mirth. She shimmied her shoulders back into proper posture and tried to gaze upon her partner, a footman named James. Pretending him to be the hero from North Cumberland in her novel, Kitty lowered her eyes before raising them once again in a perfect ladylike\u00a0flirtation.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The hired\u00a0quartet\u00a0of musicians were instructed to begin again by the dance master and Lady Matlock strolled around the dance lines to inspect the form and precision of Mary Bennet, Catherine Bennet, and her niece. Raised voices and a door slamming\u00a0at the front of the house assaulted the smooth strains of the violins and cello. Once more, the ladies of the dance line began to lose their attention to the formations and it was Mary Bennet who suffered the two younger girls\u2019 missteps as they both glanced at the parlor door and collided into\u00a0her.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ow! Have a care for my person, if you please!\u201d Mary Bennet blew a breath up to flutter her bangs in exasperation. Swiftly, Georgiana Darcy apologized for the mistake, but Kitty merely rolled her eyes at her sister. Mary had trod upon\u00a0her feet not two sets ago as she was easily one of the worst dancers among the Bennet sisters, having rarely enjoyed the opportunity to practice at assemblies due to her dour\u00a0personality.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The commotion from the front entryway developed to be Lady Matlock\u2019s second son, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam, returning to London from his inspection of an ancient estate of her family line. Walking nonplussed into the dance lesson, Richard scarcely greeted his mother before his eyes traveled to the one lady most often upon his mind. With an abundance of spirit, Richard gruffly tapped the shoulder of the footman assigned to dance with Miss Mary\u00a0Bennet.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I believe you will find this lady\u2019s set is spoken for, sir.\u201d The Colonel winked at Mary who blushed while Kitty and\u00a0Georgiana erupted into laughter. The poor footman\u00a0cowered\u00a0and made a hasty retreat\u00a0to the side of the room, away\u00a0from the\u00a0strong military\u00a0man.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Flustered and annoyed, the dance master struck up the musicians and another practice round of the reel began. Imagining herself in a ballroom of flickering\u00a0candlelight and swishing skirts, Mary Bennet danced with superb style, anticipating each touch of her partner\u2019s hand. She easily\u00a0stayed in time with the music, allowing her mind to visit the future of her own engagement ball where all envious eyes would be on her. Trying to catch his eye, she noticed her partner was merely moving through the motions, his thoughts appearing to be elsewhere.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The trio of couples managed to nearly finish the set before the clumsy footman assigned to Kitty missed her\u00a0hand and tripped over his own two feet to the parquet floor beneath them. As the dance disrupted, the cries of the dance master and\u00a0the exasperation of Lady Matlock combined with the silliness of the young girls, but Richard and Mary still grasped hands in the middle of the chaos whispering to one\u00a0another.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I yield, I yield!\u201d Lady Matlock exclaimed. \u201cGeorgiana, Kitty, collect yourselves.\u00a0Why don\u2019t you young people take a stroll in the park? My patience can endure no\u00a0more.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I was about to suggest the same plan, Mother.\u201d Richard happily escorted Miss Mary to the door. The staff at Darcy House assisted the three ladies with their outerwear and another company of footmen and hall boys strong of leg began to ferry furniture pieces back to the parlor through the back\u00a0hall.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">With autumn fully arrived, Hyde Park stood nearly deserted.\u00a0The most distinguished families resided away, long past delivered to their country estates in various corners of the kingdom. Mary and Richard walked at a leisurely pace as the two younger girls scampered ahead, only to slow and begin their own confidences. Mary was certain some mischief was stirring between the two sisters by marriage, but she had yet to find\u00a0evidence with which to confront them. Her speculations ceased when she sensed Richard\u2019s stormy mood in the rigidity of his arm.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I am pleased you and your father are safely returned. They had such precious little private time as a couple in courtship, and here he was bumbling it like a fool. He halted their progress and turned to face the woman in possession of his greatest respect and care. \u201cThe estate was entirely in ruins. I could not bring myself to put into words the disrepair we witnessed.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I am\u00a0aware.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">But how?\u201d Richard\u00a0asked.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mary offered her Colonel\u00a0a sweet smile and patted his arm, leading him to continue their progress so\u00a0as\u00a0not to fall too far behind their younger, ignorant chaperones. \u201cAside from the bandits, I am clever enough to read both what is said and what is not\u00a0said.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I never intended to insinuate\u00a0otherwise\u00a0\u2013 \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Fret not, I am not offended. I know I am not thought to be as clever as Lizzie, but I was prepared to hear the poor news.\u201d Mary continued to smile in hopes of encouraging him out of his sour mood. Instead, the Colonel\u2019s face began to turn a most violent shade of\u00a0red.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">But, don\u2019t you understand what this means? Poor news . . . poor news is a relative delayed on a visit. I possess\u00a0no manner with\u00a0which to provide for you the lifestyle you deserve. I cannot offer to protect you, to care for you, when I own\u00a0not even a wretched\u00a0hovel.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Mary caught her breath in an audible gasp, ignoring the angry burn\u00a0threatening the corners of her eyes. \u201cWe do not lack the funds to purchase a\u00a0hovel, I am fairly certain it would perhaps even be above wretched status, though there is no shame in humble dwellings as Scripture tells us\u00a0we\u00a0\u2013 &#8211; \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Spare me your sermons this time, woman. I will not spend\u00a0your money.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Although it was never a bother before for him to think of his marriage prospects as requiring a wealthy heiress, moving from an abstract concept to one of actual execution left more than distaste in Richard Fitzwilliam\u2019s mouth. It bitterly burned as ineptitude. Why had he not allowed his father to purchase him a higher rank years ago? He would not now be a lowly colonel awaiting\u00a0the\u00a0rank and salary to support a\u00a0family.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">As they continued to walk, Mary remained silent and Richard proved the most passive of escorts. The park was far too public a place for Mary to willingly engage in a discussion about marriage with a man who had yet to propose. A man who had just very neatly insulted\u00a0her!<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Quickening her steps, Richard matched Mary\u2019s pace and they rapidly caught up the two younger girls ahead on the path. Without blinking, for fear tears might fall, Mary released the arm of the Colonel and joined her sister\u2019s side to hear their conversation about Kitty\u2019s novel. Feigning interest in the heroine\u2019s moral motivations, the remainder\u00a0of the stroll continued with nothing amiss to distress Georgiana and Kitty. Once a robust and cheerful woman, Francine Bennet had lost considerable mass and tone, her complexion without bloom. Her reliance of the numbness from drink aged her features in a profound manner.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Spotting her harrowed reflection in a shop\u2019s window, her eyes refocused on the lettering of the sign above the door. She stepped into the small hamlet\u2019s new sundry shop promising lotions and finely crafted soaps of elegant ingredients. Carefully fingering the small display of lavender soaps stacked neatly on the counter, her heart panged at the loss of her daughters. Her Jane and Lydia both preferred lavender, but they were gone now, off in Scotland on holiday and none cared for their poor Mama. There was no room on the back of her home to dry flowers and herbs like there had been at Longbourn, nor a garden or young ladies to tend the\u00a0plantings.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Pardon me madam, would you\u00a0know the direction of the book shop?\u201d A handsome stranger with dashing dark looks asked a seemingly innocuous\u00a0question.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Oh\u00a0my husband adored Mr. Hamilton\u2019s shop. But he is no longer with us, I\u2019m afraid, the Good Lord seeing fit to take him last autumn.\u201d She paused for the man to express condolences, but when he did not, she continued. \u201cMr. Hamilton\u2019s shop is three doors down.\u201d Mrs. Bennet waved her hand, glaring at\u00a0the presumptuous, rude young man.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">He flashed her a devilish smile. \u201cI\u2019m afraid you are mistaken, kind lady. Mr. Hamilton\u2019s book shop is not three doors down. Maxwell\u2019s Books and Papers\u00a0is indeed in the location you direct.\u201d He offered her a slight bow of his\u00a0head.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Flustered, Mrs. Bennet furrowed her brow and shook her head at the impertinent young man. \u201cMaxwell? A Mr. Maxwell? Heavens, no, I have lived in this county for over twenty years,\u00a0young\u00a0man, and there is no\u00a0Maxwell in this community. No, I am quite certain it is a Mr. Hamilton who runs the\u00a0book shop, though I confess I\u2019ve seen no occasion to visit\u00a0as of late.\u201d She eyed the man carefully, not enjoying the fact of his\u00a0trying to play a trick on a poor widow such as\u00a0herself.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">With a flourish of his hand, the stranger produced a small card from his coat pocket. He flicked the card with the dexterity of a\u00a0magician and offered her the square. \u201cI am afraid to say my dear cousin Hamilton left the shop to my capable hands this summer to retire to his home\u00a0county. As he is unable\u00a0to return, I have proudly purchased the store and\u00a0inventory. I do hope you might find some occasion to visit us soon. I so enjoy assisting\u00a0a handsome lady in search of the\u00a0perfect novel for her\u00a0afternoon.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Optima;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The stranger, surreptitiously introducing himself as Mr. Maxwell, bid her good day and quit\u00a0the sundry shop leaving Mrs. Bennet startled\u00a0and holding the\u00a0card with his name upon it.
