Still mightily tired\u00a0from last evening\u2019s ball, Fitzwilliam Darcy woke happily next to his sleeping wife in her apartment at Netherfield Park. He winced and rubbed the slumber from his eyes, looking to the window for some sign of the time. Rolling over, he caressed his wife\u2019s form, nuzzling his lips to the back of her neck. Yet, she did not\u00a0stir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Running his hand over her nightgown, as both had been too exhausted in the wee hours of the morning to do much else but fall asleep in each other\u2019s arms, his hand relished the smooth transition from her hip to her stomach when it paused. He lifted his hand again and placed it on her side, slowly rolling from there to the front and then paused again. There was no mistaking a slight bump had formed on his wife\u2019s\u00a0midsection!<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Elated with joy any man would feel on the discovery of his first child\u2019s impending arrival, Fitzwilliam snuggled closer to his wife in a full embrace to keep himself from calling out. Alone so many years, he always knew his Elizabeth would bring his life inordinate\u00a0amounts of delight, but to feel his heart nearly bursting with the emotion was startling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cMmmm, Fitzwilliam?\u201d Elizabeth groggily moaned as she tightened her arms around\u00a0his.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cSleep darling. I have an errand and then I shall be\u00a0back.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cAlright,\u201d Elizabeth Darcy said without opening her eyes, merely accepting the coverlet Darcy tucked over her as he left their bed to return to her\u00a0dream.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Within the hour,\u00a0Fitzwilliam Darcy rode Poseidon as a man on a mission. The sun\u2019s position told him the day was half spent, yet with nearly everyone at the ball the night before, the hamlet of Meryton lacked the normal hustle and bustle of a small market\u00a0town.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Securing his horse in front of the town home of his mother-in-law, Darcy knocked loudly on the front door. After the customary waiting period, he knocked once more. When the polite period of awaiting an answer passed again, he began pounding on the door incessantly until some lazy servant inside deigned to perform his or her\u00a0duties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Nearly exasperated, and angrier by the minute, Darcy offered no courtesy when the housekeeper, Mrs. Eldridge, finally opened the door to the great man who let himself inside. His eyes adjusted to the dimmer atmosphere as he asked for Mrs.\u00a0Bennet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, sir, but the lady of the house is indisposed.\u201d The housekeeper appeared bewildered that he should call on the\u00a0house.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy stormed into the parlor and slapped his riding gloves to his thigh in exasperation. The parlor was just as his wife described, shabby and with different furnishings than the ones he had generously purchased six months past\u00a0to finally settle his mother-in-law on her\u00a0own.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cAdvise her Mr. Darcy is here to see\u00a0her.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, sir, my instructions are clear. I may not interrupt the missus when she has company\u2013\u201d Mrs. Eldridge stopped and Darcy\u00a0stared at her with such dark ferocity, she froze, rooted to the spot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy calmly marched past the servant and took the stairs, with the poor housekeeper calling after him this was not his house and he must not disturb Mrs. Bennet. As a matter of fact, it WAS his house, seeing as he paid the bills for the lease and larder. His Hessians echoed on the wooden hallway as even the runner was missing. Darcy pounded on the lone closed bedroom door, hearing voices\u00a0inside.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cMrs. Bennet!\u201d He pounded again, hearing sounds of a scramble inside. \u201cMrs.\u00a0Bennet!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The door flew open and Charles Maxwell stumbled out in little more than breeches and shirt, carrying the rest of his\u00a0effects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cMr. Darcy, what a\u00a0lovely\u2013 \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cGet\u00a0out.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cBut, sir, I was\u00a0just\u2013 \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cGet out!\u201d Darcy snarled, scaring the cad\u00a0into tripping over his own two feet down the\u00a0hallway and toward the stairs. \u201cNever return!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Grasping the doorframe, Fitzwilliam Darcy inhaled deeply a number of times and listened to Mrs. Eldridge showing the pathetic excuse for a man to the door. Restoring his character from his bout of temper, he gave his edict to Mrs. Bennet. \u201cDon a dressing gown and meet me downstairs.\u201d Then, he walked away, not thinking for a moment Mrs. Bennet would fail to\u00a0obey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Nearly ten minutes later, Mrs. Bennet walked into her own parlor to her sour son-in-law standing at the window, looking out, his hands clasped behind his back. He made no sign of acknowledging her presence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cYou have called quite early, Mr. Darcy. After an evening such as a ball, a lady needs her rest, you\u00a0see\u00a0. . .\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cHow much have you overspent your finances, madame?\u201d Darcy refused to look at his wife\u2019s\u00a0mother.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cOverspent? Why, I have not overspent one farthing. My lifestyle is simple, though I may have loaned some funds to a few friends in need.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy turned around. \u201cYou mean one particular friend, do you not?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Mrs. Bennet clutched the top of her lace shawl in her own defense. \u201cEr\u2013 yes, one particular friend,\u00a0perhaps.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt was a mistake to leave you to your own devices after the loss of your husband, I see now. I shall have this house for\u00a0sale\u2013 \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cNow, see here Mr. Darcy, I am not some trifle to be ordered about. My Lydia shall return, you\u2019ll see, and take care of her dear Mama.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cLydia is not returning to Hertfordshire. It is impossible.\u201d Mr. Darcy tried to keep the edge to his voice under good\u00a0regulation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cNot return? Do not be ridiculous! Of course my Lydia will return, you\u2019ll see. And Jane will bring her husband back here to purchase Netherfield Park and then I will not need your generosity.\u201d Mrs. Bennet smiled broadly, calculating\u00a0she\u00a0had trumped the proud and disdainful Mr.\u00a0Darcy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The sickening expression\u00a0of triumph returned\u00a0to Fitzwilliam\u2019s mind the horrific interview he conducted with Mrs. Bennet and her sister Phillips last winter whilst trying\u00a0to warn them about Wickham, the cause of this entire mess. The memory had value, as Fitzwilliam Darcy was a man not prone to repeating his mistakes. He retreated that day, but he would do no such thing on this\u00a0day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cLydia is dead. Your daughter is dead. There is no one coming back to take care of you, you misguided, puffed up\u00a0goose!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cNo!!!!!\u201d Mrs. Bennet wailed, and the stark-nosed face of Mrs. Eldridge peeked into the parlor, then hastily vanished. Mrs. Bennet continued to wail and wretchedly pull on her shawl. \u201cNot my dear, sweet Lydia. A mother would know! A mother would know! She\u2019s not gone. She cannot be\u00a0gone.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The pure anguish softened Darcy\u2019s heart and he adjusted his tactics. She had needed a shock, no doubt of that, but his words had served the proverbially slap and now he needed to convince her of\u00a0his plan, for everyone\u2019s safety and well-being.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Approaching his mother-in-law carefully, he pulled a handkerchief from his coat and offered it to her. Mrs. Bennet accepted the kindness and used the fine cloth so thoroughly, Darcy pulled his hands back lest she offer to return it. Instead, she began wringing and wrestling the cloth in her\u00a0hands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cEven Jane shall not come back? She has not written to me . . . you see.\u201d Mrs. Bennet vaguely waved to another part of her house where Darcy assumed she kept her\u00a0correspondence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI would like for you to live at Pemberley with us, Mrs. Bennet.\u201d Darcy held his breath as a small part of him wished she would spurn the invitation. He was grossly\u00a0disappointed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cTruly? To Pemberley? But, why I never, that is, Lizzie made it quite clear to me I was unwanted\u00a0and\u2013 \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cThere are conditions.\u201d Darcy retreated to his comfortable position by the window, spying Poseidon lazily searching the ground for grass. \u201cThe first being that you will shed your nasty habit of playing favorites amongst your\u00a0daughters.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cFavorites? You are mistaken, sir,\u00a0I love all my daughters, though my poor, poor\u00a0Lydia\u00a0. . .\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cWill you stop interrupting me?\u201d Darcy snapped his head to glare at her and worried she might begin wailing afresh when her lower lip began to quibble. \u201cGood.\u201d He turned his back to view\u00a0the main road in and out of Meryton and spied a farmer\u2019s wagon passing\u00a0slowly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cMy wife is likely expecting our first\u00a0child.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cLizzie is breeding? Oh do not worry, Mr. Darcy, though I only had daughters, you can be sure my Lizzie will do her duty and bear you a son. Yes, you can mark my words on that\u00a0subject.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The word breeding always made Darcy think of livestock, not a condition he wished to apply to his lovely wife. In fact, if he did not hurry this along, she might arrive at any moment to find why he was there. There was little his man kept from her personal maid, a breach of loyalty the Master of Pemberley never considered before entering the marriage\u00a0state.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI have no doubts about Mrs. Darcy, madame. But you have a choice to make. You may come to Pemberley and enjoy a life as a beloved and cherished widowed grandmother to my children, or forever be cut off from your\u00a0family.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cCut off? Why ever, whom ever, Mr. Darcy you presume a great deal if you think . . . \u201d Mrs. Bennet struggled to voice her ire, but not go too far as to irreparably offend the\u00a0man.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cYour exploits are well-chronicled amongst your friends and neighbors. The Gardiners shall not take you in. If you elect to continue in this scandalous manner, I shall feel no regrets in severing all ties to you and protecting your unwed daughters from your depravities.\u201d Mr. Darcy showed no signs of weakness as he accused Mrs. Bennet of the worst\u00a0behavior.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Between his wife\u2019s reports, his own inquiries, and the gossip he heard last night, Darcy had no doubt that a lowlife cad was playing his mother-in-law for the fool and she had enough life experience to know better. The daughter Lydia he could forgive for youthful naivet\u00e9, the mother, on the other hand, had orchestrated her own misery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI shall have to consider, that is, you\u2019ve given me little time to reflect on this\u00a0matter.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy slid his left hand into one riding glove and his right hand into the other. With practiced control, he flexed them both again and again to assure a proper fit. \u201cMy family departs Netherfield on the morrow at ten o\u2019clock sharp. I shall see your carriage, packed with the goods you wish to keep, or take your absence as an answer in itself. Either way, at the end of this month, this property will no longer be available for your use and you will need to find other accommodations.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cBut, but, but . . . I\u201d Mrs. Bennet stammered, utterly in awe regarding the information she must\u00a0process.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cGood day to you, madame.\u201d Darcy bowed his head and collected his hat from the wisp of a housekeeper standing in the entryway, beaming at the man for the set down to her mistress. Darcy handed Mrs. Eldridge his card and whispered for her to send inquiries to his London household with the card attached if she wished to remain in his employ. Otherwise, he would be happy to write a\u00a0reference.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Mounting Poseidon and finding his seat, Darcy\u2019s shoulders hunched as a cold wind swirled through the air, assaulting him without mercy. He squinted at the road ahead and nudged Poseidon to canter with his heels. Yes, with too much delay, the roads to Pemberley would become treacherous. There was no greater goal in Fitzwilliam Darcy\u2019s chest than to deliver his family safely\u00a0home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy was about to follow Miss Bingley on his way to his wife, when Charles spied him and called out. \u201cDarcy, my man, I wondered where you were off to so early this morning. Come in, come in.\u201d Charles waved his friends in, but Darcy was uncertain, though he complied with his host\u2019s\u00a0request.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI called on Mrs. Bennet, inviting her to move to Pemberley.\u201d Darcy shook his head when Bingley offered him a drink, not wishing to keep this audience\u00a0long.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Charles poured himself a healthy amount and collapsed into an armchair by the fireplace. \u201cHe\u2019s penniless.\u201d Charles lifted his glass in a sardonic manner and toasted towards his\u00a0friend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Perplexed, Darcy took another few\u00a0steps further into the library. \u201cAm I to know who we are speaking\u00a0of?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cLord Bergamote, or more like Lord Brokealot. He\u2019s a fake, an imposter. And Caroline announced their engagement two weeks ago in the Times, so there\u2019s little choice\u00a0now.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cBut the settlement, surely when you signed the settlement papers those too would be fraudulent, and therefore the contract is now null and\u00a0void.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Darcy pinched the bridge of his nose as his wife\u2019s words in London came back to him. She had said Jane protected herself twice, and he meant to ask about the second occasion, but too many distractions had been present. \u201cWhat do you mean you imposed upon Miss\u00a0Bennet?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Charles Bingley\u2019s cheeks reddened as he confessed how he allowed his passions to run away with him in Lady Matlock\u2019s drawing room and Jane Bennet corrected his behavior with a swift right hook. \u201cBut we\u2019re still friends, eh,\u00a0Darcy?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Fitzwilliam Darcy straightened to his full height as the indignity this man-child had wrought on his family resonated. Charles Bingley ran around with all the funds in the world, but shirking the mantle of responsibility at every turn. The term \u2018friend\u2019 tasted bitterly of hypocrisy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u201cCharles, had I known of your assault on my sister-in-law I assure you my family would not have trespassed on your generous hospitality. Unfortunately, I cannot remove us earlier than tomorrow, and I wish you well with your conundrum of Miss Bingley\u2019s marital prospects.\u201d Fitzwilliam Darcy curtly bowed to a shocked Bingley and quitted the\u00a0room.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

As Darcy climbed the stairs to the apartments he shared with his wife, his man announced a bath was ready and Darcy sunk into the tub with the same thoughts as before.
