Chapter 6 - If Mr. Darcy Dared
A collective hush fell over the ballroom as the first couples stood in two neat lines. Elizabeth stood between her sisters, Jane and Mary, who were dancing with Mr. Bingley and Mr. Collins respectively. Directly across from her, a full four inches taller than the gentlemen on either side was Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth noticed that in the romantic candlelight of the ballroom he looked more like the charming gentlemen she met on Oakham Mount than the proud and stuffy snob she believed him to be.
As was fashionable, the first violin began a single low strain as the couples nodded to each other in courtesy. When the rest of the instruments joined in the piece, all three Bennet ladies extended their right hands to grasp their partners’ left forearms and the set began.
“Forgive me, but you appear less jolly then when I left you this afternoon,” Mr. Darcy noted as he and Elizabeth took three steps into the direction of the musicians. In unison, the couples turned and began their short promenade in the other direction.
“Less jolly? You are mistaken, for I dearly love to dance.” Elizabeth gave a hollow laugh that even those who spent less time studying her person than Mr. Darcy would recognize as a false emotion. They turned again and Elizabeth grasped both of Mr. Darcy’s hands with a tighter grip than most ladies of his acquaintance. There was no use as the more Elizabeth tried to conceal her irritation, mostly aggravated by the conversations in the carriage with her elders, the more subtle hints she conveyed to her dancing partner against her will.
They each stepped closer to each other to form a nearly perfect line as each couple went to the other’s side, only Mr. Collins and Mary ruined the lovely effect to the notice of most in the room. Mr. Darcy used the opportunity to  gently squeeze Elizabeth’s hands provoking a small gasp of shock as the lady looked up directly into his gaze.
“I make no mistake,” he said as they pulled apart and came close again, this time standing on the other side of their partner. “I only wish you would tell me,” he continued as Elizabeth left Mr. Darcy’s arm to take a spin with Mr. Bingley before returning back to her own partner and gently clapped as Mr. Bingley and Jane walked down the line to take their new places at the end.
Mr. Darcy never finished his thought as the sequence began again and Elizabeth held her tongue. But each time Mr. Darcy gently squeezed her hand, her body betrayed her with an illicit thrill of affection. Inwardly, she cursed her traitorous heart with each dance step.
Finally, realizing she would not get many more opportunities to push the issue with Mr. Darcy, she cleverly came up with a subtle barb see how he would react, much as her aunt had suggested, but on a subject she cared about more.
“If my mood has altered, it is the results of an obligation to one’s cousin that has dashed my hopes, sir.” Elizabeth allowed her venomous anger to punctuate her last syllable. Completing the ascribed steps, she held her breath as she neared Mr. Darcy’s person to avoid his intoxicating scent of sandalwood and musk. She would not meet his eye and instead stared at the button holding his vest together, which only brought thoughts of how his chest had felt so warm . . . Elizabeth nearly stumbled as she blushed and wished the set was already over.
Mr. Darcy missed the lovely blush of his partner as he glared over her head at the bumbling fool next to him, Mr. Collins. When the shorter man bumped very rudely into the backside of Elizabeth as they took a turn, Mr. Darcy sneered, “Watch yourself, sir!”
Chapter 6 - If Mr. Darcy Dared (cont'd)
It was now time for him and Elizabeth to take their promenade down the line and he held his partner’s hand proudly to the applause of the other couples in the dance. He cocked his head to one side to say closer in her ear that he understood what a burden one’s family could be.
“And yet if we have a responsibility to such a burden, it would be prudent for one to not conceal such a responsibility, would you not agree?” Elizabeth challenged Mr. Darcy as they waited half of the dance sequence to get themselves back into the line at the end. Until the music stopped, the reel would work the couples up to the top once more.
“If the obligation to one’s cousin is unpalatable, I believe one must find a way to lessen the weight,” Mr. Darcy answered.
Almost forgetting they were in a very public ballroom, Elizabeth’s ire began to get the best of her. Was Mr. Darcy stating that he intended to jilt his cousin? They came together once more, she prodded further.
“My cousin, Mr. Collins, does not agree with you. His patroness is your aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. He was quite clear in his opinion on the matter.” Elizabeth watched Mr. Darcy’s face closely as she took a turn with John Lucas to move up the line and felt rewarded when the man’s face contorted into a scowl before resuming a mask of indifference.
Feeling vindicated, Elizabeth held herself in a taller posture the rest of the dance and she finally allowed herself to enjoy the constant touching of Mr. Darcy’s person. After all, she reasoned, revealing that she knew his secret, this would very likely be the end of his pursuit.
As the music began to slow, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth found themselves in the middle of the dance line as the final strains signaled the end. To her surprise, Mr. Darcy grasped her hand as he bowed low in a much more intimate farewell than any other couple in the line save Mr. Bingley and her sister Jane. When he rose, Elizabeth had been so shocked she had forgotten to curtsy herself and Fitzwilliam stared into her eyes.
“I wish we were able to speak more, but I’m afraid now is not the time.”
Nearly tripping over his own two feet, Mr. Collins bumped into Mr. Darcy with great apologies. “I beg your pardon, we have yet to meet. Mr. Collins, at your service, Parson to the great Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Kent. I believe you are her nephew, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy?”
Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy stared incredulously at Mr. Collins. When the squat parson finished his low bow, he spied that Mr. Darcy still held his cousin’s hands. Mr. Collins reached out to snatch Elizabeth’s grasp from Mr. Darcy. “I could not have you for the first, but come, come, Cousin Elizabeth. It is my intention for this to not be our only dance of the evening.” Mr. Collins gave Elizabeth a smarmy smile and directed his affronted relation away from Mr. Darcy.
Watching Elizabeth escorted away, Mr. Darcy shook his head and took a half-step away from the dance floor before Miss Bingley found his arm.
“My, my, Mr. Darcy, I believe you were just dismissed by a man of the cloth,” Caroline commented as the couples began to line up.
Ignoring Caroline’s comment, Mr. Darcy suddenly noticed the music was about to start and he had dumbly delivered Elizabeth into the hands of her cousin. She had just warned him that oaf was attempting to secure her hand in marriage!
“Miss Bingley, may I have the pleasure?” Fitzwilliam asked breathlessly as he did not wait for her affirmative response before marching them into the line of couples and rather crassly pushing their way to stand next to Elizabeth and Mr. Collins.
As the music began, Elizabeth endured the next few minutes of humiliation as it would appear Mr. Collins’ work for the church did not include practicing dance steps. More than once, Mr. Collins’ miscalculation caused Elizabeth’s hair to brush Mr. Darcy and her head involuntarily jerked in his direction with each touch. The result each time ended in a monstrous pain as then Mr. Collins tread upon her slippers.
Though he hated society, Mr. Darcy stood up as an excellent dancer. He effortlessly guided Miss Bingley in the prescribed motions while keeping a keen eye on the grubby hands of that parson. In Mr. Darcy’s opinion, Mr. Collins touched too low on Elizabeth’s waist far too often for his liking.
The two couples were separated by the inevitable march on the outside the lines for this dance to take their place at the end.
Miss Bingley tried to capture Mr. Darcy’s attention. “I was surprised you danced the first set with Miss Eliza. Pray, when am I to wish you joy? I believe your future mother-in-law will have many suggestions for the redecoration of Pemberley when she comes to visit.”
A thundering headache waged in Fitzwilliam’s mind so he had paid hardly any attention to Miss Bingley’s words before giving her a courtesy nod. He craned his neck to see the end of the line as a small scuffle had broken out where Elizabeth and Mr. Collins had taken their place.
Miss Bingley’s eyes bulged as without so much as saying a word, Mr. Darcy abandoned her and stalked forward with a tenacity that interrupted the movement of the couples around him. So abrupt was his change in direction, they soundlessly afforded him room to walk down the middle of the lines to his target.
“I told you to mind your hands!” Elizabeth thrust her cousin’s hands away from her person as he took a step towards her and pressed his chest into her shoulder as she turned away.
Across the ballroom, the scuffle attracted the notice of two old friends.
“I believe your Lizzy is in trouble,” Sir William pointed out as Mr. Bennet hummed with amusement. He pouring his cup afresh with brandy before turning to follow Sir William Lucas’ line of sight.
Mr. Bennet frowned taking his first sip. He could not hear the argument, but recognized his daughter’s expressions of anger anywhere. Groaning, Mr. Bennet nonchalantly began to make his way through the throng of people before the spectacle became too great for him to reach them. Each time he was blocked, he took a healthy swig of his brandy and bumbled his way through muttering apologies and using his glass a menacing threat of spillage if someone did not move.
Chapter 6 - If Mr. Darcy Dared (cont'd)
“You are too free with your favors for Mr. Darcy, Cousin. And yet have no respect for mine. But you’ll see, it has all been settled,” Mr. Collins jerked his cousin by her hand as she turned away from him, trying to mimic the dance steps of the couple near them to return to the set.
Elizabeth looked frantically about her for means of escape, spinning away from her cousin in a feigned dance move when for the second time that day, she found herself in the arms of Mr. Darcy. She had taken a step as Mr. Collins unfortunately stood on the hem of her gown and she stumbled. Catching her by her elbows, Mr. Darcy gently steadied Elizabeth as Mr. Collins made the unfortunate mistake to also reach for his cousin’s arm. The two men practically playing a tug-of-war caused Elizabeth to cry out. As she flinched, Mr. Darcy released one side to strike Mr. Collins’ arm so that the rogue would release her.
Though the music kept on, the couples had all but ceased dancing as now Mr. Collins cried out, with the crowd suddenly blocking Mr. Bennet’s path entirely just as he was a few feet from his daughter.
“How dare you harm your relation!” Mr. Darcy roared as he instinctively held Elizabeth protectively with his right arm. Utterly baffled, Elizabeth did not stop to think about her situation as she turned her back to Mr. Darcy and looked for an explanation from Mr. Collins.
“Are you in pain?” Fitzwilliam questioned, his baritone voice sounding warm and comforting as he leaned closer to her ear. His eyes had come to rest on the red marks left by Mr. Collins’ hand on her upper arm.
Feeling her exposed skin break into goose flesh, she followed the line of her alabaster forearm up to the proof that her cousin had been too rough and beyond, up to meet Mr. Darcy’s gaze. With a gasp, she closed her eyes as she suddenly began to feel an overwhelming confusion fog her mind. What a complete humiliation, publicly, in a ballroom!
“This does not concern you, Mr. Darcy. I have made arrangements with her parents.” Mr. Collins reached out again to escort his cousin away from Mr. Darcy, but as Elizabeth reviled at his touch, she inadvertently pressed herself closer to Mr. Darcy.
Without further need of encouragement, Fitzwilliam protectively increased his enveloping grasp to turn her away from the threat. Elizabeth shivered. But she looked up at Mr. Darcy fully cognizant this entire situation was beyond propriety. As her face crumpled in despair, speech unable to leave her barely opened mouth, she and Fitzwilliam lost themselves in each other’s vulnerability.
“Mr. Darcy! You have lost your senses!” Caroline Bingley cried out as she had worked her way through the stunned lines to stand behind a sputtering Mr. Collins.
To the audible gasps of those around them, Fitzwilliam’s resolve shattered as his Elizabeth looked as though he had never seen her before, frightened and utterly reliant upon him for rescue.
“Please,” she whispered, licking her lips, refusing to break their focus on each other.
Just as a hand touched Mr. Darcy’s shoulder, he lowered his head and pressed his lips to the tender mouth of Elizabeth Bennet. And with more than four-and-twenty families standing as witness, she kissed him back.

Hi. I’m new to this site but I’m very familiar with your work, having purchased several of your books already. Keep up the good work in enabling all of the P&P addicts out there.
Found some typos Not sure how to get them to you but I recall an email address. Will try that. Thanks. Looking forward to rest of the story!
Thank you so much for the email! I made all the corrections to my draft and the online version! You’re awesome for letting me know!
Wow! That was fast. I do a lot of proofreading for work, so it was my pleasure. Hate to say this but I missed two or three things. I should’ve read through it twice before sending my email. My bad.
I’ll have to go back and reread the other chapters, I missed the part about how Collins made the arrangement with the Bennett’s for Lizzy hand in marriage. I thought how William saved Lizzy was marvelous. So strong and determined.
Thoroughly enjoying your story, but then I always enjoy your work! I can’t wait to read the rest of the chapters. I know that sometimes we have doubts, but just know I/we are pulling for you.
Oh wowzers that was awesome!!!!!! Looking forward to more!!!
Wow! Love the drama but what a cliffhanger! Kissing on the dancefloor, aw that was lovely 🙂
Mr Collins is in need of a set down, that’s for sure. Mr Darcy will be happy to provide, I believe…
Wonder what mr Bennet will make of it though and I suspect that Elizabeth might be a tad angry in the next chapter.
I just love this. I can not think of any four syllable words to express myself. I love love love it. Didn’t really like Jane and Lizzy paired while entering ball while ignoring my Mary, but I will get over it….eventually. I must thank you for not pairing her with —Mr. C. Keep going….love how your taking care of the Bennet girls. ….
I had to read straight through and OHHOHOHO I’m glad I did! That was fantastic!! Now that is how you rescue a lady! I can only imagine it will not turn out as well as I wish, at least not right away! I think I must buy this one! LOL Great job as always!!
Oh my goodness! The drama is real! Well they’re reputations are going to be ruined… for now(?). I didn’t know it would be on the dance floor. Whoa. I had to keep stopping and starting. Well, Elizabeth West, that was totally unexpected but far from boring! Awesome, well done.
Happy that Darcy dared to kiss Elizabeth in his effort to protect her from Collins Hope Mr. Bennet will give him permission to marry her
Yay! What a disaster dancing with Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet is not as fast as Darcy. They kissed!
