Chapter 8- If Mr. Darcy Dared

Sounds of her family arriving woke Elizabeth from her light slumber. Lying in the bed she shared with Jane, she grasped the covers more tightly and cringed. The muffled voices below were unintelligible as to content but she could still make out her mother’s shrill voice above them all. Remaining abed, Elizabeth did not leave to greet them all. She had nothing to say to defend her behavior. In the time she had waited for her father to return she had imagined almost every torment waiting in her future as a result of the ball.

Even if Mr. Bennet had not planned to return to the ball to collect his family, he would have had no choice. The imbecile footman had not called the Bennet carriage but the Byng carriage, belonging to Monica and Chandler Byng, a family of long-standing in the community. Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth had both been so upset from the last interview with Mr. Darcy that neither one of them recognized the carriage was not their own until they were halfway to reaching Longbourn. What might have been a folly shared between father and daughter was not one, as Mr. Bennet had not scolded and Elizabeth had not confessed anything more. So other than remarking on the wrong carriage for the wrong family, their ride back to Longhorn was silent.

After a half hour of his daughter’s silence, Mr. Bennet held no wish to further endure such a parenting chore and left right away to return the carriage.

“I would be a poor neighbor, indeed, to linger if Mr. and Mrs. Byng wish to leave the ball early,” Mr. Bennet remarked.

Elizabeth nodded and bade her father well as she stood in the doorway. She reflected on the young children of the Byngs, Rachel, Phoebe, and little Joseph. Before Mrs. Ross, Mrs. Byng’s sister, had come to stay with them, Elizabeth and Jane had often called on their friend Monica to provide her with company. Monica Ross had married young, but she was not even a year older than Jane.

Just as the thought of suggesting such a visit to her sister appeared in her mind it became squashed by the realization that after the ball, everything would be changed. Mr. Darcy had kissed her in front of everyone! There was a good chance not a single respectable door would be open to her in all of Hertfordshire.

“Miss Lizzy, you are back. Have you turned your ankle again?” Mrs. Hill, Longbourn’s housekeeper, immediately flocked to Elizabeth’s side as she stood in the foyer.

“No, I’m afraid it’s all too horrid to retell. Forgive me,” she said, shrugging off the care of Hill and taking the stairs above to the room she shared with Jane. Feeling ill to her stomach, Elizabeth struggled out of her ball gown. Mrs. Hill had followed the young lady up even though her assistance had been declined. Without a word, she helped Elizabeth out of her garment and hung the lovely frock up so it would not wrinkle too badly for the laundry maid.

Elizabeth crawled into bed. She allowed herself to cry again, and after Hill left her, she fell asleep.

Chapter 8 - If Mr. Darcy Dared (cont'd)

Now that her family was returned, Elizabeth rubbed her stinging, dry eyes and tried to think of the time. If she had not fallen asleep, she might have known if her family came directly home or if they had enjoyed the rest of the evening.

The door to her bedroom slowly creaked open.

“Lizzy?” Jane asked tentatively, carrying a candle in her hand to light her way.

For half a moment, Elizabeth remained still, acting as though she were still asleep. Jane gently closed the door behind her and set the candle on the table. The illumination from the small flame exposed Elizabeth’s face twitching and Jane realized her sister playacted her slumber.

“Help me with my buttons, and we shall talk,” Jane said, in a gentle tone that was as close as she would come to scolding Elizabeth.

Elizabeth sighed, flopping her arms forward to move the covers aside with an exaggerated motion. She stood on her knees so that she could reach Jane’s hair and began pulling out the pins before she would work on the buttons holding the gown closed. As the pins released the tension in Jane’s hair, she yawned and rubbed her neck with her hand. It had been a long and exhausting night for both of the Bennet sisters.

“I suppose you want some kind of explanation, but I swear I have none. I don’t know what came over Mr. Darcy,” Elizabeth explained she kept her hands busy.

Jane shrugged her shoulders. “Did he give you an explanation about his cousin?”

“No,” Elizabeth said. She rocked back to sit her posterior against her heels as Jane moved forward to shrug out of her gown and into her nightgown. “That is, I did not get much of a chance to speak to him about it. I raised the issue of a burden with one’s cousin, and he stated that if there is a burden with one’s cousin that one should ignore it.”

Chapter 8 - If Mr. Darcy Dared (cont'd)

Jane fumbled for a moment to find the proper holes for her head and her arms in her nightgown, looking like a silly apparition in the moonlight by the window. Finally, her head popped through the neck hole and she looked at her sister with concern.

“Did you make it clear you are speaking about his cousin and not ours?” Jane asked.

Elizabeth’s face widened in horror.

“Oh I am such an imbecile! No wonder he.And then Mr. Collins… And then he–” Elizabeth crumpled, covering her face with her hands as she began to cry afresh. She was beginning to wonder how many tears a young woman could possibly cry over one evening when she felt Jane’s arms around her.

“There, there,” Jane comforted her sister as Elizabeth’s body wracked with sobs. Jane bit her lip. She wanted to also tell Elizabeth about her happy news with Mr. Bingley, a happiness she was able to share with their father when he returned to Netherfield. But it did not feel like the right time.

“Oh Jane, what have I done?”

“Well, you did say that his behavior improved when you saw him this afternoon. Perhaps if there is no impediment with his cousin you shall be wished nothing but joy?” Jane tried to offer her wishes for the outcome as an exclamation, but it sounded too much like a question to Elizabeth’s ears.

Elizabeth shook her head, and gently pulled away from her sister so that they might both slip under the covers properly. The girls wiggled their toes as they waited for their body heat to warm the space under the blankets.

“I fear,” Elizabeth began before pausing as her thoughts were not fully formed. “I fear that a young woman in Kent is going to be severely disappointed on my account and I worry that Papa is right. Mr. Darcy acted impulsively and come tomorrow, he will remember that he does not truly like me and I will be ruined,” Elizabeth finished.

Elizabeth rose up on her elbow to blow out the candle and flopped to her back just as Jane spoke.

“I hope tonight is the only night that you go to sleep in fear, Lizzy. Mr. Bingley says that Mr. Darcy talks of nothing but the kindest words for you.” Jane couldn’t help a yawn interrupting her reassuring word. “I am certain come morning, we both shall have brighter days ahead.”

Elizabeth rolled over and tugged the blankets around her shoulder as Jane held steady to maintain her own section of the quilt.

“I hope you’re right, Jane. If not, I’ve made a mess of everything. Papa will have to send me away.”

  1. You did say she kissed him back… I don’t see how she can be angry at him. He was trying to talk to her father and request her hand. I hope the next post is happier for ODC.

    1. I try to write my characters real to life in that we are always changing our minds. I think yes, she would have kissed him back. Then been angry after, should be at herself as well, but why do that when Mr. Darcy is present to be angry at? 🙂

  2. Hahaaaa! Monica and Chandler! All I could think was Janice’s voice. “Chaaandler! They’re taking our carraige! Do something Chandler! CHANDLER!” Completely hilarious! It did take me out of the story a bit though when it was supposed to be such a serious scene.

    Still giggling though.

  3. Happy that a distraught Elizabeth has Jane to help her sort out her feelings and show her that her query of “obligation to cousins” to Darcy had prompted his action of the kiss and which her kissing him back may lead to a happy conclusion for her.
